Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will not be shipping entirely on disc, but the game is still staying true to fans of physical media.

This is because director Naoki Hamaguchi himself is quite fond of physical game collections. According to the director, he had to fight to ensure Final Fantasy 7 Revelation got a physical release.

Why it matters: PlayStation is moving on from physical media, and big games like GTA 6 are skipping discs entirely.

Speaking in a Radio Times interview, the director said that modern releases face the pressure of going discless altogether.

Naoki Hamaguchi states that although his authority on how a game ships is limited, he did make a strong case in front of Square Enix to ensure that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would not skip this option.

He also addressed fan demand for this option. According to the director, physical media still holds a special place in his heart, even if it will be abandoned at some point in the future.

I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible.

Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation may be the last entry in the series to ship with a disc, especially since PlayStation plans to abandon discs in 2028. The director does, however, suggest that future titles could ship with codes in boxes.
