There have been reports that we could see the next-gen consoles released as early as next year. However, amid the memory crisis, which has led to even the current-gen consoles getting close to a $1000, it wouldn’t make much sense. 

A former PlayStation boss has also weighed in on the situation and suggests that Sony and Nintendo, especially, should keep the current-gen consoles going for as long as possible, as fans are happy with PS5 and Switch 2. 

Why it matters: Nintendo won’t obviously come out with a new console any time soon since Switch 2 is still relatively new, but both Xbox and PlayStation are rumored to be preparing their releases for late next year. 

I think they should try to keep the current generation as long as possible, because people are very happy using PS5 and Switch 2

Speaking to The Verge, Shuhei Yoshida said that people are really happy using the PS5 and Switch 2, and the sales speak for themselves, so it is better for these companies to keep concentrating on the current generation. 

He further talked about how hardware prices have reached astronomical highs, and if people have a current-gen console or a good enough PC, they are highly unlikely to upgrade anytime soon, based on the prices.

Of course, there is a solid chance the PS6 doesn’t come out next year since, yes, the PS5 is still selling very well. However, Xbox seems to have locked in on late 2027, since the new leadership wants a renewed hardware focus.
