For a multitude of reasons, it won’t be wrong to say that no gamer is truly anticipating next-gen hardware. With an expected $1,000 price tag predicted to drop sales of both Xbox Helix and PS6 by 40%, the next generation of consoles feels like an imminent failure.
Nonetheless, work on both of the consoles is well underway, with innovations like a full-fledged AMD Magnus APU set to be a part of the Xbox Helix suite. Now, new information has come out about the expected performance from next-gen hardware, and the Microsoft console seems to have a leg up.
Why it matters: A faster and more powerful console could be what Xbox needs to put up a strong fight against PlayStation next-gen following the many mistakes made by the latter.
Insider Kepler_L2 revealed in a series of comments on NeoGAF that the Xbox Helix is expected to be 40% faster than the PS6. The Microsoft console will ship with 56 TFLOPS of GPU power, while the PS6 is measuring around 40 TFLOPS, as per the leaker.
In addition, Xbox Helix will have more computing power and a higher power budget compared to the Sony hardware. Kepler_L2 also stated that chips for both of the consoles have been taped out, meaning the chip design has been finalised and sent to the manufacturer for production. Hence, a late 2027 launch could be a possibility for the next-gen suite.
The leaker also disclosed that, compared to the PS5, PS6 has double the raw power, 12 times faster ray tracing, and an AI computer that is 50-70x faster. Furthermore, the Sony console will have a functional dual-issue processor, with huge gains in AI and neural rendering.
Considering how Sony has lost a lot of grace with fans due to its digital-only policy, a faster Xbox console built for affordability and shipping with a disc drive could turn out to be a thorn in PlayStation’s side.
