When the Resident Evil movie by Zach Cregger was first announced, there was a lot of skepticism around it. Fans were worried it would turn out to be another low-effort adaptation, just like the countless ones we’ve already had. 

However, the movie has turned out to be exceptional, and breaking box office records. The Resident Evil movie recorded sales beyond projections with a global $108M opening, which is the highest in the franchise’s history. 

Why it matters: Cregger’s take on the franchise is very different from the previous ones. It does borrow from the world of the games, but instead of adapting the game’s characters, this is a story about an original character.

The Resident Evil movie in its first weekend generated $60 million domestically, with a total revenue of $108 million. Additionally, it is also the highest-rated horror movie of the year, with a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. 

It has also become the director’s highest-grossing movie in this period, and it seems the sales will keep on going strong. It is expected to end its theatrical run with over $350 million on a budget of around $75 million. 

This shows that fans didn’t have a problem with Resident Evil movies; they had a problem with boring, reused ideas and adapting popular characters into adaptations that weren’t needed. Cregger had a fresh idea, and it has paid off.
