Sony Only Developed 4 New IPs In PS5 Generation So Far, And 2 Of Them Were Shut Down

Intergalactic And FairGames$ Really Needs To Pull A Lot Of Weight Here!

Story Highlight
  • Sony has only developed 4 new franchises in the PS5 generation so far.
  • Two of these games were shut down following poor reception, leaving only 2 lasting IPs.
  • The company is expected to launch Intergalactic and Fairgames$ in the coming years before next-gen begins.

Sony has suffered multiple setbacks to its reputation this year, which has weakened player confidence in the brand. From the decision to cancel first-party discs to pulling support from Hideo Kojima’s Physint, each choice has pushed the company deeper into controversy.

The PlayStation ecosystem faces deeper turmoil after players analyze other fumbles that Sony has made in the ninth console generation. For example, Sony has only developed 4 new franchises nearly six years after the PS5 first came out, compared to PS4’s 21 unique IPs that we got over its lifespan.

Why it matters: The company’s focus on live-service initiatives, many of which even failed to come out, really weakened its position in the gaming sector compared to the PS4 era. Players would have preferred a focus on more unique new first-party entries instead.

Saros
Housemarque’s new Saros franchise only saw a decent reception at best.

As discussed on a recent ResetEra forum, Sony has only launched the following franchises in the PS5 generation so far:

  • Returnal
  • Saros (technically a spiritual successor)
  • Concord
  • Destruction AllStars

Sony has already shuttered 2 of these 4 new IPs, namely Concord and Destruction AllStars, following their poor performance. Meanwhile, many other live-service initiatives were cancelled during development, and nothing eventually came out of them.

To add more fuel to the fire, Returnal and Saros technically share the same gameplay loop, so they don’t stand out from each other. This has caused further uproar in the community for a lack of new first-party franchises.

The publisher still plans to launch Intergalactic and Fairgames$ in this generation, but there are concerns that the latter could also be canned following its poor reception in internal playtests and development struggles.

Concord
Sony’s live-service initiative has been an utter disaster so far in this generation.

It’s unclear if the brand is planning any secret new IPs for the remaining PS5 generation, but fans argue the company really needs to rewrite its strategy if it aims to pull back millions of disappointed players.

Do you think Sony not working on enough new franchises has been a big problem for the PS5 generation? Can the publisher recover in the remaining years of this generation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
