That is where monitoring tools help. If you game on a Mac, knowing what your hardware is doing can make it much easier to understand stutters, frame-rate drops, overheating, or sudden slowdowns. Thankfully, you do not need an expensive tool for everything. macOS already includes a surprisingly useful option.

Here are the Mac monitoring tools I would actually consider using in 2026.

Activity Monitor should be your first stop because it is already installed on every Mac. You can find it under Applications > Utilities, and it provides information about CPU, memory, energy, disk and network usage.

The CPU section is particularly useful when an app suddenly makes your Mac sluggish. You can see which processes are consuming the most processor resources and close something that is clearly misbehaving.

There is also a GPU History window that gives you a real-time view of graphics activity. It is not designed specifically for gaming, but it is enough to answer basic questions about whether your GPU is actually being used.

For most people, Activity Monitor is all they need. I would not install another app until I had checked this first.

2. Stats

Best for: Free menu bar monitoring

Stats is one of the more interesting options if you want information available without constantly opening Activity Monitor. It is a free, open-source macOS utility that can display CPU, GPU, memory, disk, network and battery information directly in the menu bar.

That makes it much more convenient during everyday use. You can glance at the top of your screen and immediately see whether your CPU or GPU is doing something unusual.

It is also a good fit for gamers who want useful information without an enormous collection of graphs and numbers. You choose what you want displayed and leave the rest alone.

For a free tool, Stats does a lot. Unless you need very detailed sensor information, there is little reason to spend money before trying it.

3. iStat Menus

Best for: Detailed monitoring

If you want to know practically everything your Mac is doing, iStat Menus is one of the better-known options.

It puts CPU and GPU information, memory usage, temperatures, fan speeds, network activity and other system data in the menu bar. You can customize what is displayed, which is useful because nobody needs twenty different readings staring at them while playing a game.

I particularly like this kind of monitoring when troubleshooting performance. If a game starts stuttering or the Mac becomes unusually warm, having hardware information available makes it easier to work out whether the problem is actually the hardware.

The downside is simple: iStat Menus is a paid application. For someone who only checks system usage once every few months, Activity Monitor is the smarter choice.

4. Macs Fan Control

Best for: Watching temperatures

Sometimes CPU and GPU usage are not the main concern. You already know your Mac is working hard. What you really want to know is how hot it is getting.

Macs Fan Control is useful for this. It provides temperature and fan information and can show how your Mac reacts when a demanding application or game starts running.

This can be especially useful when troubleshooting thermal issues. Instead of guessing whether your Mac is overheating because the chassis feels warm, you can actually check the available temperature readings.

I would not recommend constantly forcing your fans to run at maximum speed, though. Monitoring the temperatures first is much more sensible than trying to cool a problem you have not identified.

5. Terminal Tools

Best for: Users who like command-line tools

If Terminal does not scare you, there are lightweight monitoring options worth checking out.

htop remains useful for watching CPU usage, memory and running processes, although it does not provide dedicated GPU monitoring. There are also newer macOS-focused projects designed with Apple Silicon in mind that can display CPU, GPU, memory and power information directly in Terminal.

These tools are obviously not for everyone. If you want colorful graphs and simple controls, use Activity Monitor or a menu bar app. But if you are comfortable working in Terminal, command-line monitoring can be surprisingly useful and keeps resource usage low.

Do Mac Cleaners Fix High CPU Usage?

This is one area where I would avoid the usual advice you see in performance articles.

Mac cleaners can help with things like unnecessary files, old data and storage management, but they are not a magic solution for high CPU or GPU usage.

If a game is using most of your processor, deleting some old files is unlikely to suddenly improve your FPS. You should find the cause first and clean up your Mac only when there is actually a storage or clutter problem.

Monitoring should come before maintenance. Otherwise, you are just guessing.

Which Tool Should You Use?

For most Mac users, Activity Monitor is still the best starting point. It is free, already installed and provides enough information to investigate most performance problems.

If you want something permanently visible, Stats is an excellent free option. For users who want more detailed system information, iStat Menus is worth considering. And if heat and fan behavior are your main concerns, Macs Fan Control is more useful than a general monitoring app.

As a gamer, I would not obsess over the numbers, either. A CPU running hard while compiling something or a GPU working heavily during a game is perfectly normal. The numbers become useful when they explain something you can actually feel, such as stuttering, frame-rate drops, excessive heat or sudden slowdowns.

That is ultimately what a good monitoring tool should do: help you understand the problem instead of making you stare at a bunch of numbers for no reason.
