- Modern Warfare 4 has lost roughly 50% of its Steam beta players.
- This decline is interesting since the current player base mostly consists of die-hard Call of Duty fans.
- Many players seem to be criticizing the beta’s fast-paced gameplay and similarities to recent Modern Warfare titles.
Modern Warfare 4’s first beta isn’t going as great as Activision and Infinity Ward would’ve liked. After criticism online, the beta appears to be bleeding players rapidly, leading to a 50% drop in player numbers.
Why it matters: Call of Duty’s recent release with the Black Ops ports shows that there is still interest in the series, but Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t seem to have attracted the players in quite the same way.

Modern Warfare 4 is already facing a sharp player drop during its beta period, at least on Steam. The new Call of Duty beta has lost around 50% of its players after its initial surge.
After peaking at over 115K players, the beta is currently down to just 42K players, while peaking at 61K players in the last 24 hours. This statistic is interesting since Activision has yet to open the beta up to everyone.
This means that most of the current audience represents hardcore Call of Duty fans that pre-ordered the game to obtain beta access. One would expect this crowd to stick with the first-person shooter, but this doesn’t appear to be the case.
Over on social media, many fans are clearly fatigued by the Modern Warfare series’ similar style of gameplay year after year. Some have also criticized Modern Warfare 4 for its high-octane gameplay, which caters to those who master the movement system.
Of course, with the beta yet to open itself to everyone else, it remains to be seen how Infinity Ward’s upcoming title will be perceived by the general public. However, for now, the situation certainly looks quite concerning.
What do you think is driving the beta drop? Let’s discuss in the comments below.
