PlayStation’s Live-Service Strategy Continues to Struggle as Horizon Hunters Is Rebooted After Negative Feedback

The Negative Survey Feedback Prompted Sony To Remove The Live-Service Elements From The Game!

Story Highlight
  • The upcoming Horizon Hunters has been rebooted following negative feedback.
  • The game will be stripped of its live-service elements and now feature co-op elements with a story mode.
  • Most of Sony’s planned live-service games have been cancelled or failed terribly even if launched

PlayStation’s pivot to live-service games in this generation has strayed from its history of making quality AAA releases. What’s worse is that this live-service strategy has largely failed.

The latest failure in this trend is Horizon Hunters, a spin-off multiplayer title set in the Horizon universe that was supposed to be a live-service title. However, negative feedback from the game’s survey has prompted Sony to reboot and scale down the game.

Why it matters: Not just Sony, but the entire industry, has wasted billions of dollars chasing the live-service bandwagon despite knowing it’s bound to fail for the most part and, in doing so, has ruined entire franchises.

Horizon Hunters Is Going With A Different Atmosphere Compared To The Single-Player Games

As reported by Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, private testing for Horizon Hunters didn’t go so well last year and following the feedback, Sony has decided to change direction for the game.

Instead of being cancelled, the game will now be scaled down to a cooperative multiplayer game with live-service elements stripped away. The game will now have a story mode as well.

Upcoming Fairgame$ Has Also Changed Genres Following Testing

Nearly all of the studio was working on Horizon Hunters, so the next mainline game is still years away at this point, and only a few people are plotting out the next entry. This reboot has set back their plans by a few years, so it’ll be a while before we see anything from Guerrilla Games.

Sony planned to release 12 live-service games by 2025, but most have been cancelled, and even those released have failed terribly, i.e Marathon.
