- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, the new installment in the franchise, is coming to last-gen consoles.
- According to a leaker, the shooting title is being playtested on PS4.
- Previous reports suggested older hardware wouldn’t be considered, as Infinity Ward wanted to redefine gameplay.
2025 wasn’t the best year for Call of Duty, as Black Ops 7 failed to attract players amid intense competition. The new installment was discounted by 50% after just one month, with the franchise’s overall playtime and revenue dropping by 60% across all platforms.
Due to the abysmal numbers Call of Duty posted last year, Activision is going in a new direction with the franchise, with a fresh slate of titles set to release in 2027. However, as far as the upcoming entry is concerned, the IP is still going to launch on last-generation consoles even in 2026.
Why it matters: If Activision wants to appease fans and bring players back to the shooting franchise, the company has to stop letting last-generation hardware hold it back.

As per the leaker Alaix on X, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, rumored to be the next entry in the franchise, is currently being playtested on the PlayStation 4. Therefore, the upcoming Call of Duty title won’t forego last-gen hardware as rumors previously suggested.
Insiders like TheGhostOfHope reported that the IP will not be heading to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this year, with Infinity Ward updating its engine as a result, making Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 a better product.
However, Alaix is a reliable insider, and his leaks regarding skins and other datamind content have turned out to be pretty spot on. Hence, it feels like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 will be held back by consoles over a decade old, just like Black Ops 7.

With reports of a new subfranchise being introduced in 2027 to kick off a fresh slate of titles, Call of Duty keeping last-gen support for another year before the big reset does make sense. However, Infinity Ward was reportedly looking to redefine gameplay systems for Modern Warfare 4, and porting to last-gen could make sweeping changes difficult.
