As long as I can remember, I have used a keyboard and mouse for gaming. The mouse was the best tool for me. It was fast, accurate, and easy to control. To me, controllers were only good for console gaming and nowhere near as powerful as a mouse.
So I was completely prepared to be disappointed when I decided to ditch the mouse-and-keyboard combo and play only with a controller. But what happened changed my view on gaming peripherals entirely.
The Initial Struggle
It was not easy at first, and everything felt strange. My aim suffered drastically, and I was slow to the point where even simple tasks felt difficult. I kept reaching for my mouse instinctively and made a lot of mistakes, which would otherwise make me seem like a rookie. It felt like learning something entirely new, something which I wasn’t used to at all.
This cost me matches, and honestly, it was quite frustrating. Things got to the point where I just wanted to give up on the controller and go back to what I knew. Somehow tho I persevered and kept going.
My Adaptation
After a few weeks of using my PS5 controller, I started to notice some changes. My aim was better, the controller felt comfy and more. Slowly but surely, I was beginning to grasp how the controller actually worked.
The comparisons in my head to my old way of gaming stopped, and instead of aiming for fast, perfect play, I focused on being smooth and natural. The analogue sticks gave me more control in the game, and everything finally felt right.
Some Games Felt Better Than Others
I also noticed that some games felt better with a controller as compared to mouse. In open-world and story-based games, movement was smoother. Walking, running, and overall camera movement felt much smoother and more natural. Racing games felt amazing, thanks to the analogue controls, which let me adjust the magnitude of input, making driving a car feel realistic.
But when it came to shooting games, that’s where I missed my mouse the most. In my experience, joysticks are nowhere near as precise as a mouse. Even with aim assist, the inputs did not feel as accurate as when using a mouse. This changed the way I played FPS games. I used to be all about quick reactions and fast gameplay, but the controller forced me into a more strategic, planned style.
Using a controller was also surprisingly relaxing and less hectic while doing long gaming sessions. My wrist didn’t nearly hurt as much, allowing me to immerse myself in the elaborate world of the games I was playing.
When The Realization Hit
For the longest time, I was actually scared of using a controller and watching my rank plummet. When I finally embraced it, I was almost shocked by how quickly I adapted. I noticed that over time, I developed a certain “flow” I stopped thinking about how to manage the controller, and it became as easy as using my mouse and keyboard.
The haptic feedback, sensitive controls, and overall ergonomic design made playing with a controller a good option for me. After a while, the controller felt like home and was, frankly, easier to use than my mouse-and-keyboard combo. I realised that the way you play a game changes how the game feels to play.
Which Is Better?
A mouse and a controller are both good for their own separate reasons. A mouse allows for you to react almost instantaneously, whereas, when it comes to controller gaming, the gameplay becomes a tad slower, forcing you to soak in the game. It is a matter of preferences. I wouldn’t put either peripheral superior to the other.
If you like playing fast-paced shooting games or games that demand quick reactions and pinpoint precision to win, go for a low-latency mouse. However, if you’re more into adventure, racing, and narrative titles, then a controller might be the superior option.
Final Thoughts
Before starting this experiment, I thought controllers are not as good as a mouse. I now understand that they are just different control surfaces. I still use a mouse and keyboard for shooting games, but after a long day, when I want to lie back and relax, a controller is my choice.
Learning to use a controller was a difficult task; however, after overcoming the learning curve, I unlocked a new form of gaming and one that was very enjoyable. In the end Ill say that controllers are much better than I once thought.
