- Stellar Blade developer Shift Up has acquired Unbound, the new studio from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.
- The South Korean company will publish the studio’s new IP and all future projects in a bid to increase its global publishing prowess.
- The announcement also revealed a first look at Mikami’s new game, giving fans a glimpse of what’s about to come.
The success of Stellar Blade has made developer Shift Up a formidable force in the gaming world. Due to the 6 million-plus sales of the title, the Korean studio has set new profit records, with its Director becoming one of the richest men in South Korea.
Shift Up has multiple titles in development, including a sequel to Stellar Blade and another RPG inspired by Expedition 33. Now, the company has made another big move, acquiring the studio made by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.
Why it matters: Shift Up has been banking on the success of Stellar Blade by making all the right moves, and acquiring the talent of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is another one of them.
Shift Up has revealed that it has acquired Unbound, buying all shares of the new studio formed by Shinji Mikami after he left Tango Gameworks. The company stated that this partnership is an effort to increase its publishing capacity on both PC and consoles.
As revealed last year, Shinji Mikami’s Unbound is working on a new IP for consoles and PC, which will now be published by the developer of Stellar Blade. Furthermore, Shift Up will provide resources for any future title created by the Resident Evil alum and also handle publishing directly.
The company’s CEO, Hyung-Tae Kim, stated that this partnership is very meaningful as it will help Shift Up deliver the best gaming experiences to players globally and solidify the publisher as a competitive force in the industry.

In the teaser video uploaded by the South Korean company, players also get to see the first look at Shinji Mikami’s new game, with a winged monster towering over a destroyed city. Unbound will also make smaller titles alongside this AAA flagship game, so ambition and creativity aren’t sacrificed.
