- Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says Sony is pulling back from releasing first-party single-player games on PC.
- This means that Marvel’s Wolverine, Intergalactic, and the God of War games will be PlayStation exclusives.
- On the other hand, Xbox has also confirmed that it’s thinking of bringing exclusivity back.
The era of exclusivity seemed to be over when Sony first released 2018’s God of War on PC a few years ago, and Xbox went down the publisher route with all of its new first-party titles being multiplatform.
Or at least that’s what we thought, so. According to a new report, Sony is pulling back from releasing first-party games on PC, backtracking on its original strategy.
Why it matters: Sony’s first-party single-player catalog is the biggest reason why PlayStation is regarded as the best console. It seems that with increased competition, they want to make exclusivity a core feature for their platform again.
Speaking in the latest episode of Triple Click (on the 43-minute mark), Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said he believes Sony will pull away from traditional first-party single-player releases on PC. However, live-service games will continue to release on PC, maybe even Xbox, but that remains to be seen.
I think the sense I’m getting is that they’re backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional single-player stuff on PC.
He further adds that the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine won’t be released on PC either. This also excludes the possibility of other future first-party story games on PlayStation, including Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and the upcoming God of War games.
Initially, this was thought to be speculation, but the insider doubled down on his claim, confirming the story.

Jason Schreier will soon publish a story talking in depth about this matter. Surprisingly, the insider said that all the games Sony published on PC weren’t successful. This makes sense considering PC ports only account for less than 2% of their overall yearly revenue.
Sony just announced a Death Stranding 2 PC Port, but it is notable to mention that it’s not a first-party release. As for Ghost of Yotei, it’s unclear whether that game will arrive on PC, as plans for a PC port may have been in place before this strategy change.
At the same time, recent rumors suggested that Sony had cancelled many of its first-party ports for PC. With this change, Nixxes Software will most likely be out of commission as well.

On the flip side, Xbox has also hinted at making first-party releases exclusive again under the newest CEO, Asha Sharma. For Team Green, nothing is set in stone, so they’ll decide this later.
It is quite possible that Sony felt threatened by the next-gen Xbox, which is reportedly a hybrid PC, meaning it can run PlayStation PC games as well.
