Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Graphics Won’t Be Compromised by Multiplatform Release, Say Devs

Day One Launch For Lower-End Platforms Like The Xbox Series S And Switch 2 Doesn't Mean That The Developers Will Downgrade The Game's Visual Quality!

Story Highlight
  • Square Enix has dismissed any concerns regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 graphically being downgraded due to the planned multiplatform launch.
  • The developers are known for making games for a high-end PC and then toning it down when porting to other platforms.
  • They’ve also praised the Xbox and Switch 2 as great platforms and noted a great reception.

Following poor sales of recent Final Fantasy titles, Square Enix decided to release Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on multiple platforms, and the results were surprisingly robust. This strong sales performance was a wake-up call for the developers who now no longer believe exclusivity to be a viable strategy.

As such, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is now being released as a multiplatform title, day one across all systems. However, launching such a demanding release on lower-end platforms like the Xbox Series S and Switch 2 would impact graphics quality, but the developers have dismissed any concerns, saying they’re still aiming for the highest bar.

Why it matters: The Switch 2 hasn’t been on the market long, but the Xbox Series S has previously been criticised for holding back developers. However, from what Square Enix is saying, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Switch 2 Port Outperformed Xbox Series S

Automaton recently had the chance to sit down with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3’s game director, Naoki Hamaguchi, and discussed the potential concern about them dialling down the visual scale for the next entry, as it will be a multiplatform launch.

Here’s what Naoki Hamaguchi had to say in response:

However, basically, just because we’ve made the FFVII Remake series multi-platform this time, the quality of the trilogy will not be diminished, and that’s not the kind of development structure we have in the first place.

This makes sense, given that Square Enix has historically developed Final Fantasy games as high-end PC titles and then scaled them down when porting to other platforms. This is why we saw such a wide range of graphical customisation across all platforms in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Moreover, the developers are advocates for the Xbox Series S and the Switch 2, even though most of the industry has rebuked them (at least the Xbox Series S) for being weak. That said, they did confirm that the Xbox port for Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a tough challenge, but nevertheless, an achievable one.
