"You Look Lonely, Microsoft Can Fix That"

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft AI CEO says that we can expect intimate AI companions in 5 years.
  • In the same message, Mustafa Suleyman says the companion will help navigate through life challenges.
  • AI chatbots as companions is a sensitive topic, as it has led to both fortunate and tragic events.

Microsoft has been pushing for worldwide AI adoption, which makes sense considering its $80 billion investment into data centers. The tech giant has started imposing generative AI across all its services, with the Copilot assistant transforming every Windows 11 system into an AI PC.

Now, the company has more absurd remarks to follow. According to an executive at Microsoft, AI companions will be available within about 5 years, and they’ll know users deeply and live alongside them.

Why it matters: AI has caused more harm to the world than good, and the way things are progressing now, we’re truly headed towards a dystopian future.

Microsoft AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, had the following to say in a new video message:

In 5 years time, everybody will have their own AI companion, which will know them so intimately and so personally that it will come to live life alongside you.

AI chatbots certainly have the capability to be friends, and there are already platforms like Replika and Nomi.AI that serve the same purpose. However, Microsoft’s adoption will certainly exceed that, as it aims to create a unified AI experience across all its products and services, possibly through Co-Pilot.

Still, the prospect of a personal, close AI companion is quite perilous, given recent events surrounding ChatGPT, which encouraged a teen to commit dangerous acts that led to a tragic outcome.

But on the other hand, we have cases of people marrying AI chatbots, like this one Japanese woman who recently got married to ‘Klaus’, an AI persona created through ChatGPT.

Perhaps the 5-year window Microsoft is talking about is to further refine the experience and create a safe environment for people to interact with the companions. Nevertheless, the drawbacks are far too great to neglect since AI is quite unpredictable.

What is your response to Mustafa’s insight on this AI development? Do you think intimate AI companions are a good idea? Let us know in the comments below, or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.
