Nvidia was rumored to open the new year with the announcement of the RTX 50 Super series. It was said that this lineup would refresh the current offerings of the RTX 50 generation with GPUs offering more memory and slightly better performance.
Unfortunately, the current landscape has created uncertainty within the tech and PC industry. Amid ongoing memory shortages, it appears Nvidia has cancelled the RTX 50 Super GPUs.
Why it matters: This is not the first time rumors have suggested that Nvidia no longer intends to launch refreshed versions of its latest generation GPUs.
This report comes from Board Channels, which states that industry sources believe Nvidia has delayed its RTX 50 Super graphics cards indefinitely.
What this means for the refresh remains anybody’s guess for now, but the report goes over why Nvidia has made this decision. To nobody’s surprise, the main culprits are rising memory prices and a lack of competition.
Nvidia does not currently see an immediate need to refresh its existing graphics cards due to its lead over AMD in the market. Elsewhere, the gaming giant’s goal of relying on 3GB GDDR7 modules for the RTX 50 Super lineup has been thwarted by the current shortages.
Recent rumors also suggested that the RTX 60 series would launch at some point in 2027, leaving around a year and a half before the new GPUs hit the market. As such, the much-anticipated RTX 50 Super refresh may never see the light of day.
Although the supposed cancellation is certainly disappointing, Nvidia’s decision is likely for the best.
Even if Team Green went ahead and launched new graphics cards, most consumers would not be able to buy them at decent rates due to current pricing issues worldwide. As such, focusing on the next generation seems like the better option for Nvidia at the moment.
