Gaming will become increasingly difficult in 2026 as we face several economic challenges and, most importantly, inflation in component prices due to the worldwide DRAM shortage, which is heavily affecting the consumer electronics market.
RAM and SSD price increases have already taken effect, and soon, other components will follow. GPUs could be next in line, as an insider states that AMD and Nvidia are preparing for a major price hike in 2026.
Why it matters: The RTX 50 and RX 90-Series GPUs turn a year old in 2026, and instead of getting discounts, their prices are being increased, which shows how terrible the market has become.
Insider states that AMD and Nvidia’s contract for memory chips at the previous prices ends in 2025. Memory prices will certainly be higher with the newer contracts, ultimately increasing production costs for GPUs.
For Nvidia, their new year begins in February, as January 2026 still counts as Q4 2025. As such, in February, Team Green will announce a price hike across all GPU offerings.
AMD, however, will end its Q4 of 2025 this month, meaning that starting January, expect Team Red to revise prices on its GPUs.
The report further states that the price hike in the next couple of months is just the beginning, and things are expected to get much worse as 2026 unfolds. Nvidia also reportedly plans to release the RTX 50 Super lineup sometime next year, and with the DRAM fiasco, the lineup may even be cancelled.
Not only the PC side, but consoles are also expected to increase in price by 10-15% in the next year. If the memory shortage lasts longer than anticipated, manufacturers may even be forced to delay the next-gen consoles.
As such, we urge gamers who plan to buy or upgrade their gaming hardware to do so now, as they may not be able to within their planned budget after the holidays.
