Black Flag Is Still The Gold Standard of the Assassin’s Creed Formula!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag recently celebrated its 12th anniversary.
  • The game continues to stand out for its naval combat, parkour, and other gameplay elements.
  • Edward Kenway’s narrative is also incredible to this day.

Assassin’s Creed has undergone a major identity shift over the last decade. What began as a stealth-focused action-adventure IP has now turned into a series of full-blown RPGs, with Ubisoft only recently returning to the classic formula with Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

However, back in 2013, the gaming giant also released Assassin’s Creed 4, striking a perfect balance between the stealth-focused roots of the series and more expansive open-world gameplay. Recently, this entry celebrated its 12th anniversary.

Why it matters: Ubisoft is rumored to be working on multiple Assassin’s Creed remakes, and Black Flag is reportedly first in line for this treatment. This choice has been made for good reason.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag Remake
Black Flag Was Impressive On Every Level

At release, Assassin’s Creed 4 became famous as being more about pirates than assassins. However, the overall narrative still kept the core pillars of the Assassins vs. Templars conflict intact, giving fans of the series’ classic themes something to latch on to.

Moreover, Edward Kenway turned into a fully-fledged assassin by the end of the narrative, becoming one of the franchise’s most memorable main characters. It would not be far-fetched to say that very few leads since Assassin’s Creed 4 can match his character arc.

In terms of gameplay, Black Flag also presented a very balanced approach. On one hand, the naval combat broke new ground for the series, offering something that was completely new to Assassin’s Creed in 2013. This element was first introduced in Assassin’s Creed 3, but Black Flag expanded the naval combat in multiple ways.

Elsewhere, Assassin’s Creed 4 offered plenty of stealth gameplay, counter-based combat, and parkour opportunities in the segments that took place on land. In this way, the game offered two completely different gameplay styles without leaning too much in one direction.

An AC4 Remake Is Now In The Works

Assassin’s Creed 4 went on to become a critical part of the beloved Kenway trilogy, impressing fans in all sorts of ways. The game has also seen a total of 30+ million players since its launch, highlighting just how big an impact it left on the franchise.

Looking at the numbers, it makes sense that this was the title Ubisoft picked for its first Assassin’s Creed remake. Fans can only hope the remake captures the true essence of what made Edward Kenway’s adventure so impressive in 2013.
