- Paramount has put the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin project on hold.
- The studio is indefinitely putting it on the back burner to work on a more family-friendly adaptation.
- However, the project could be put into development at a later date.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have remained relevant in pop culture for over 40 years, thanks to numerous media adaptations. Paramount, which owns the rights to the IP, announced a project some time ago based on the universally acclaimed Last Ronin comic run.
It was intended to be the franchise’s first non-animated installment in ten years, and would tell the story of the last surviving Turtle avenging the deaths of his brothers. The project attracted a lot of interest from fans due to the darker, more mature nature of the original comic run. However, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans will have to wait a little bit to see this come to life.
Why it matters: Paramount shelving a project based on the fan-favorite comic run is one of the reasons Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are suffering under its leadership.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has put the movie adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin on hold. The live-action movie was only announced by the American media giant last year, and if reports are accurate, it will be shelved for the time being.
Paramount doesn’t want the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in over a decade to be a bloodier story that is not family-friendly. According to the report, the company intends to grow the franchise in a similar PG-13 direction to Sonic’s.
Hence, a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is in development with a more family-friendly tone, and it won’t be based on The Last Ronin.
All is not lost for the fans of the comic run, however, as Paramount is open to revisiting the movie on a later date. But, for now, The Last Ronin is on the back burner.

Nothing was revealed about the darker Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game announced back in 2023, which was also set to adapt The Last Ronin. Hopefully, the game will come out before the movie does.
