If there is one game that truly stood out this year, it has been Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Sandfall Interactive took a stagnant turn-based genre and transformed it into a magical masterpiece with remarkable characters, a great storyline, and music. 

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has swept the awards at today’s Golden Joystick Awards 2025, but most importantly, has been crowned the Ultimate Game of the Year award. Based on the game’s success, it totally deserved the accolade. 

Why it matters: These awards were something everybody saw coming, considering the masterpiece Expedition 33 is, and it is also the most nominated game at the upcoming The Game Awards in December. 

It was up against heavy-hitters like Death Stranding 2, Kingdom Come 2, Silksong, and more, but emerged victorious with 31% of the votes. In total, it has been awarded 7 times at the Golden Joystick, and the awards include:

• Best Storytelling 
• Best Visual Design 
• Best Soundtrack 
• Studio of the Year 
• Best Supporting Performer (Ben Starr for Verso)
• Best Lead Performer (Jennifer English for Maelle)
• Ultimate Game of the Year

This has been a clean sweep for Expedition 33, and the same is expected at TGA. The title proved that if you put enough love and creativity into a game, you can reach a massive audience even with a less popular genre. 

Sandfall has nailed everything with the game. It excels in everything from character development and storytelling to voice acting and soundtrack, making it the definitive best release in a year filled with many other great releases.
