Implementing Cost Cutting Measures With New PS5 Slim Model!

Story Highlight
  • New reports reveal Sony is set to launch the PS5 Slim CFI-2116 model later this month.
  • The PS5 Digital Edition will now ship with 825GB of storage compared to the 1TB of storage in current models.
  • This change reverts the PS5 to the same amount of memory it originally launched with in 2020.

The PS5 recently underwent a price hike to combat the US tariffs. The console is now more expensive to purchase than the launch model, with the Digital model seeing two price hikes since its release.

Although no additional price increases have been announced by Sony, a reliable insider reports that the PS5 is set to receive a new revision soon. According to his sources, this revision will feature less storage than the current PS5 models.

Why it matters: The vanilla PS5 launched with less than 1TB of storage. This was later upgraded once the PS5 Slim arrived, but it seems Sony is making drastic changes again.

The PS5 Pro Remains Unaffected By This Change

According to Bilbill-kun, the PS5 Slim Chassis E arrives very soon. This particular model of the console ships with just 825GB of storage, mirroring the memory available to users in the PS5 at release.

The insider notes that all consoles with the CFI-2116 reference will carry the aforementioned 825GB of storage. Interestingly, this change seems to apply to PS5 Slim Digital Editions only.

Consoles that ship with a disc drive will retain the 1TB of storage, suggesting that they will not carry the CFI-2116 reference number. Anyhow, the CFI-2116 model is set to launch in Europe on September 13.

No information is currently available about the global launch, but an official announcement from PlayStation should follow shortly. Although nothing has been said on the matter, it seems this move is part of Sony’s cost-cutting measures with the PS5.

The gaming giant is doing its best to combat changing economic conditions and recent tariffs, so it seems to be squeezing every bit of profit possible. Shipping the digital model with a smaller SSD in particular could drive further storage sales for Sony, potentially offsetting the costs to produce the hardware in the current economy.

The PS5 Has Become Quite A Bit More Expensive Since Release

For the unaware, the original PS5 shipped with 825GB of storage but offered just around 667GB of usable memory. Therefore, the new PS5 Slim Digital Edition should come with a similar amount of free memory.
