Several months after its release, Doom: The Dark Ages remains notorious as one of 2025’s most intensive PC releases. The game even spurred debates about the diminishing gains in graphics brought about by the use of mandatory ray tracing.
This also meant that running Doom: The Dark Ages was a tall order for all handhelds, with the likes of the Steam Deck being incapable of handling the title. Fortunately, the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X seems to deviate from the trend, offering 70FPS gameplay at 1080p with ray tracing.
Why it matters: Handheld technology has come a long way over the last decade, with the latest hardware trying to keep pace with new home consoles.
According to Cary Golomb, who had hands-on time with the ROG Xbox Ally X, Doom: The Dark Ages can achieve 60+FPS gameplay at 1080p when customized with the right settings.
The game does not allow gamers to disable ray tracing, so this frame rate was achieved with ray tracing in place. Cary Golomb used a mixture of low and medium settings while also making use of FSR.
With FSR set to 540p base resolution, the game was rendered at 50% of 1080p to achieve these results. Moreover, frame generation was also used on the ROG Xbox Ally X, resulting in 70FPS in Doom: The Dark Ages.
While the performance is certainly impressive for such a limited form factor, it is important to note that the Rog Xbox Ally X is the more powerful handheld coming from Asus and Xbox in the future.
It is set to be priced at nearly $1000, which may make the performance appear less impressive, but there is no denying the capabilities of the Ryzen Z2 SoC in the ROG Xbox Ally X.
Once both Xbox handhelds are officially available, it will also be interesting to see how the base ROG Xbox ally fares in this demanding first-person shooter.
