Game Indefinitely Delayed!

Story Highlight
  • Bungie has delayed Marathon with an indefinite release date.
  • The studio will implement feedback from the alpha test and continue to improve the game with new features.
  • A new release and update are expected during the Fall.

While Microsoft’s gaming acquisitions have been bearing fruit for them, the same cannot be said for Sony. Their acquisition of Bungie, a former developer of the Halo series, has been questioned by gamers due to the lack of activity.

That was until their latest reveal of Marathon, a long-forgotten FPS franchise, which they decided to revive. However, the reveal didn’t go as planned, with players expressing disappointment over uninspired gameplay and the studio facing internal turmoil over allegations of plagiarism.

Now, Bungie has officially delayed Marathon indefinitely, which was a decision everyone saw coming.

Why it matters: Bungie, being a veteran studio, has high expectations to meet from gamers. Moreover, the Marathon franchise also has a long-standing history, and a delay was the right call to release the game in a much better state with implemented feedback.

Insider Says Marathon Is Destined To Fail

Bungie has posted an official message on its website, stating that it has decided to indefinitely delay the initial release scheduled for September 23, 2025. According to them, they’ve been incorporating feedback from the Alpha playtests and agreed that these changes are necessary for a better release.

They’ll be working on improving the enemy AI, revamping combat, enhancing visual fidelity, and, lastly, adding proximity chat.

Their next update with a release date will be revealed in the Fall later this year.

For a live-service game, Marathon surely had a lot of complaints from players. Everything about the game was uninspiring, from the gameplay and live-service model to the extraction shooting mode, as per the fandom.

Hopefully, the final release will be a significantly improved game compared to the initial look. If PlayStation wants to double down on its live-service trend, it could learn a thing or two from Helldivers 2, the game they themselves published.
