Multiple Squad-Based Co-Op Gems Have Inspired This Game!

Story Highlight
  • A new interview confirms that FBC: Firebreak is inspired by Helldivers 2 because of its friendly fire and other mechanics.
  • The studio believes that the game’s potential is comparable to that of titles like Payday, Darktide, Deep Rock Galactic, and others.
  • The studio wants to avoid predatory live service elements to ensure a player-friendly gameplay loop.

After creating a series of compelling horror narratives, Remedy Entertainment is unexpectedly diving headfirst into its first multiplayer venture with FBC: Firebreak. New details confirm that the entry is heavily inspired by Helldivers 2, a successful co-op shooter.

Anssi Hyytiainen, the game’s Lead Designer, confirms that FBC: Firebreak features satisfying friendly fire elements to keep the gameplay exciting. And having to mow down hordes of enemies is also quite reminiscent of Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2.

Why it matters: FBC: Firebreak is shaping up to be a project designed for gamers instead of profits. Its gameplay loop is created to satisfy players looking for a quick session without worrying about any FOMO elements.

FBC Firebreak
FBC Firebreak is one of the most anticipated multiplayer titles this year.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Anssi Hyytiainen says that FBC: Firebreak features cause-and-effect gameplay, with interactions between different mechanics blending to create emergent gameplay moments, similar to what we’ve seen in Helldivers 2.

Friendly fire is a good example of a very controversial design idea because people have different contexts [from] where they think about it. […] They think of military shooters, super realistic [games], immediately.

Additionally, the studio believes FBC: Firebreak’s potential is up there with the best co-op gems currently on the market, including Deep Rock Galactic, Darktide, and Payday. The game features no live service or FOMO elements and is a relaxing take on co-op shooters.

The game prioritizes quick rounds and lets you earn everything through gameplay. Three parties jump into missions together, with players using weapons, perks, and Crisis kits with wacky tools.

FBC Firebreak is focusing on a player-friendly gameplay loop.

FBC: Firebreak will be released on June 17, 2025, for consoles and PC. The chaotic FPS co-op shooter already appears to be receiving a positive reception in the ongoing previews.

Do you think FBC Firebreak will live up to the players’ expectations and take off because it avoids predatory live service elements? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
