Microsoft Isn’t Pushing Generative AI on Xbox First-Party Studio, Claims Dev

Studios Given Choice To Use or Deny AI Technology!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox recently announced its Gen-AI model and is focusing on using the technology.
  • The South of Midnight developers confirmed that Xbox isn’t forcing first-party studios to use it.
  • Every studio is given the choice to use it or not.

South of Midnight was released last month as an Xbox exclusive. The game was received fairly well, and it has now reached a million players.

Xbox also recently announced its own generative AI model, which impacts all first-party teams, including Compulsion Games. However, the studio has confirmed that they aren’t forced to use it in their games; it solely depends on the developer’s choice.

Why it matters: Although Xbox has been focusing on AI, it’s great to see that the company isn’t pushing its first-party developers to use it.

South of Midnight Has Already Reached Over A Million Players

During a recent interview with Game Developer, Compulsion Games CEO Guillaume Provost talked about the Xbox AI technology, confirming that first-party teams aren’t being forced to use it in their games.

I can absolutely guarantee [that generative AI usage] is not mandated

-Guillaume Provost

He further stated that Compulsion Games builds everything on its own. The studio is very art-oriented, and it’s in its DNA to work on everything by itself. Guillaume Provost further stated that it depends on the developers to decide whether it’s good for them to use AI technology in their titles.

I think there are a lot of cases where it could be helpful in pre-production — not really stuff that we use in production, but stuff that we want to accelerate.

Guillaume Provost believes that the type of game Compulsion develops rarely needs the use of AI, so it’s likely that the studio will continue to develop games the way they have been doing. Fortunately, Microsoft will likely be fine with this decision.
