- The Last of Us Part 2 is incredibly intensive on PC.
- Analysis of the PC port reveals that it fails to run at a constant 60FPS using an RTX 3060 when matching PS4 visuals.
- The game’s recommended Medium preset also looks worse than the visual output on the PS4.
The Last of Us Part 2 has become the latest PlayStation title to launch on PC, arriving with a slew of graphical upgrades over the original PS4 version. PlayStation has released the remastered version on PC, and as expected, the game looks solid on this platform.
The port is also much better than the disastrous PC version of The Last of Us Part 1, but analysis shows that The Last of Us Part 2 can sometimes look worse on PC than its PS4 counterpart, even when using much better hardware.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s PC releases are typically held to very high standards, and expectations for this port increased after The Last of Us Part 1’s failure on the platform.
This information comes from Digital Foundry’s technical analysis of the PC port. The analyst noted that Naughty Dog’s recommended Medium settings preset looks worse than the game’s PS4 visuals.
This preset is recommended for GPUs like the RTX 3060 at a target of 60FPS, effectively making the PC experience much worse than the console experience from nearly five years ago.
Among the settings, SSR(screen space reflections), bounce lighting, and subsurface scattering stand out as the most impacted. As the analysis reveals, many visual settings at High match the standard PS4 output.
When attempting to match the PS4’s visuals on PC, the results were even more surprising. Here, the RTX 3060 failed to maintain a constant 60FPS at 1080p due to the port’s higher-than-expected GPU-limited nature.
These results are out of the ordinary since the RTX 3060 is many times more capable than a base PS4. The RTX 3060 is more comparable to the PS5’s GPU, making the results in The Last of Us Part 2 quite disappointing.
As mentioned earlier, The Last of Us Part 2 is still a better PC translation than its predecessor, but these results are far from ideal. When compared to the best of Nixxes’ output, this PC port fails to impress on multiple levels.
