- Nintendo has published a new patent about a magnetic phone holder accessory that allows dual-screen gameplay on Switch 2.
- This accessory can latch onto the Switch 2 and use the phone as a second screen, serving as a modular addition or a single screen.
- The patent is broader in scope, so various other devices could also be attached to Switch 2, along with the attachment serving as a stand.
After years of dominance in handheld gaming with the Switch, Nintendo is inching closer to launching its successor. So far, we’ve only seen a short trailer officially confirming the console’s existence, but a new patent might have revealed a great tidbit about the type of experience we can expect to have with the Switch 2.
We’ve stumbled upon a new Nintendo patent suggesting that Switch 2 might get an innovative magnetic attachment for dual-screen gameplay. The document highlights the ability to hold and rotate a phone relative to a console, allowing another device to be magnetically attached.
However, the patent is much broader in scope, as it might even support attaching other devices magnetically. These devices could serve as a second screen to be a modular addition to Switch 2 or might be utilized as a single screen.
The first apparatus and the second apparatus are connected as being rotatable relatively to each other around a magnetic force direction and attachable to and detachable from each other.
Why it matters: Nintendo’s patent reveals an accessory that holds phones or devices as modular add-ons for the Switch 2, potentially revolutionizing handheld gameplay.
The patent ‘CONNECTION STRUCTURE AND ATTACHMENT STRUCTURE’ talks about a coupling structure with two parts that can rotate around a magnetic connection. Moreover, the holder could also function as a stand for the handheld, offering added flexibility for users.
The patent highlights a bedclothes-fitting instrument, suggesting the device can latch onto soft surfaces like beds, sofas, and the like.
an attachment structure […] includes a bedclothes fitting instrument fitted to bedclothes and an instrument. The bedclothes fitting instrument includes a bedclothes fixed portion and a first contact portion.
It is worth noting that Nintendo has also heavily explored dual-screen implementation with its past consoles, so Switch 2 might take it to the next level. Still, it’s wise to stay cautiously optimistic until more details emerge.
Do you think this patent will be realized to create one of the most crucial accessories for Switch 2, or is it just another idea that will never be realized? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
