Unfortunately, it seems the game is inseparable from controversy. Recently, reports pointed to Ubisoft shifting away from Yasuke for its marketing, and the gaming giant now seems to be taking down videos criticizing the game.
Why it matters: Ubisoft has already undergone criticism for its approach to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The last thing the publisher needs is another controversy on its hands right ahead of this massive release.
Over on Twitter, Grummz reported Shohei Kondo’s video was taken down by Ubisoft after he shared a critical overview of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The content creator also replied to the thread, stating that the video was removed a whopping seven times, with hate speech cited as the main reason. As per Shohei Kondo, there was no instance of hate speech in his recent videos.
In a follow-up video, the YouTuber shared his thoughts on the situation, highlighting how his content on Assassin’s Creed Shadows was meant to offer strict albeit fair criticism in the context of Japanese culture and heritage.
He also stated that the takedown was extremely saddening and disheartening. Fortunately, the YouTuber has been able to restore his video after multiple days of back and forth with the YouTube team.
As for Ubisoft, the gaming giant has stated in the past that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is not meant to represent historical accuracy. However, many Japanese people still feel strongly about the publisher’s portrayal of Japan and its history.
