AMD Budget Series Navi 44 Wont Feature Hardware Encoders To Reduce Die Size & Cost

Expert Verified By

AMD trying its best to capture the budget GPU market!

Story Highlight
  • Navi 44 GPUs may lack hardware encoders, affecting streaming and content creation.
  • The Navi 44-based Radeon RX 9000 GPUs are expected to be priced between $179 and $349.
  • The Navi 44 GPUs will face competition from NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX 5050/5060 GPUs and Intel’s Arc B580.

The Navi 48 and Navi 44 dies will be the foundation for AMD’s future RDNA 4 GPU series. AMD’s best option for the GPU market will be the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070. However, the less expensive and lower-end cards don’t appear to provide much in terms of hardware or performance.

There are rumors that the Navi 44 GPUs won’t have any hardware encoders. According to well-known leaker @Kepler_L2, the N44 “may” not feature HW encoders. Since HW encoders are necessary for video encoding and are absent from the Radeon RX 6500 XT, this might be a possibility.

Why it matters: The performance and features of the Navi 44 GPUs will directly impact their market competitiveness. The lack of hardware encoders could make them unsuitable for tasks like video encoding, streaming, and content creation.

That said, the lower-end RDNA 4 RX 9000 cards might not be popular if the same pattern continues since users will have to rely on CPU encoding and streaming, and content creation will be nearly impossible on such cards.

While the RX 9070 XT, which is based on the Navi 48, leaks virtually every day in one form or another, the less expensive and lower-end Navi 44 GPUs are rarely seen in the leaks. As a result, nothing is confirmed yet, although it is possible.

According to rumors, Radeon RX 9000 GPUs with Navi 44 chip will cost between $179 and $349. In addition to lacking hardware encoders, the raster performance will also be a deciding factor for users.

The Navi 44 GPUs will compete with the RTX 5050 and 5060 GPU, which are expected to be released in Q1 2025, and Intel’s most recent Arc B580 GPU, which costs $249 and has 12 GB of VRAM.
