"Gameplay Comes First Is What I Learned With The Callisto Protocol!'

Story Highlight
  • Despite the huge hype, The Callisto Protocol failed to meet fans’ expectations at launch.
  • Speaking about its disappointing release, Krafton’s CEO stated that the game lacked an edge in its gameplay.
  • He believes that games that offer unique and innovative experiences have much higher chances of success.

While everyone had higher expectations from The Callisto Protocol, it failed to meet those expectations at launch as the reviews were also underwhelming of the title.

Two years after its launch, the CEO finally discussed The Callisto Protocol, stating that the game failed to meet fans’ expectations because of its gameplay

Why it matters: The Callisto Protocol was the developers’ first AAA single-player game, so the team also lacked some experience to make the title a super hit.

During a recent interview with Game Developer, Krafton CEO Changhan ‘CH’ Kim discussed the disappointing release of The Callisto Protocol and why it failed to meet expectations.

It could be the most high-quality game in the world, but if you don’t have a gameplay edge –it doesn’t work out.

He stated that the team had some difficulty deciding whether the direction they were taking with the title was right, as the team thought that a single-player narrative game should be visually stunning and a high-quality game to look at.

However, he further said that because of that, the team couldn’t focus much on its gameplay, which he believes is the most important thing after the launch of The Callisto Protocol.

Therefore, the CEO believes that not focusing more on its gameplay was the main reason for its failure.

Krafton’s CEO has also stated that an innovative and fresh experience is what makes a game more successful, and no game can reach such success without offering a new experience to the fans.

We agree with what the CEO had to say, as so many games come and go, but only the ones that offer unique and innovative experiences stay relevant and become successful.
