FSR 4 Could Be Similar To Sony's PSSR!

Story Highlight
  • AMD’s new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) will use AI for upscaling.
  • FSR 4 aims to enhance battery life on portable gaming by allowing framerate locks at 30 or 35 FPS.
  • The AI technology in FSR 4 may be similar to Sony’s Spectral Super Resolution in the PlayStation 5 Pro’s APU.

AMD FSR 4, or next-generation FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, is expected to use AI to achieve better image quality.

Why it matters: AMD FSR 4 is expected to improve image quality, allowing users to experience sharper graphics and smoother gameplay even on less powerful hardware.

The next iteration of AMD’s frame generation and upscaling technology, called FSR, will use artificial intelligence.

During a recent interview of Tomshardware with a select group of media at IFA 2024, Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President of AMD, disclosed a number of significant insights regarding the future of Radeon GPUs and technologies.

While many expected AMD to incorporate AI for their FSR technology, some questioned whether AI would find its way into the Radeon architecture.

Huynh discussed the increased use of AI techniques in AMD FSR 4. Previously, AMD was able to swiftly roll out an open-source alternative for NVIDIA DLSS technology. Still, now the AMD Radeon team is concentrating on artificial intelligence instead of more straightforward methods.

The Vice President of AMD made it clear that FSR 4 would prioritize longer battery life and allow players to lock framerates at 30 or 35 on portable gaming devices while talking about next-generation upscaling.

Sony Spectral Super Resolution technology is also a feature of AMD’s recently released flagship APU for the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro. The foundation and algorithms of this completely AI-based upscaling technology may be the same as those of FSR 4.

With the debut of RDNA 4 on the horizon, AMD is expected to improve its architecture rather than focus on raw performance. The next generation of AMD GPUs is expected to offer better efficiency, ray-tracing, and competitive prices.
