Snapdragon's Competition For Apple?

Story Highlights
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus is a lower-powered 10-core CPU.
  • The Snapdragon Plus series stands for a more budget-friendly option than Elite.
  • The company is expected to compete with Apple.

The Arm-based Snapdragon X Plus X1P64100 from Qualcomm has recently surfaced on Geekbench. Qualcomm’s lower-powered chip features a 10-core CPU and scored 1,903/2,410 points on the ML Inference benchmark from Geekbench.

Qualcomm stated that on April 24, it will provide further details regarding its Arm-based laptop chips. While the company has focused primarily on the high-end Snapdragon X Elite chip, a Snapdragon X Plus model with lower specs is also being developed and will come in four different variants.

Why it matters: The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and Plus series seem to be a direct competitor to Apple’s ARM-based chip.

Four Snapdragon X Plus models with the codenames X1P64100, X1P62100, X1P56100, and X1P40100 were reportedly planned, according to earlier rumors. The X1P64100 version highlighted in the Geekbench seems to be one of them.

In terms of specs, the Snapdragon X Plus X1P64100 features two CPU clusters, one with four cores and the other with six, and a boost frequency of 3.42 GHz. Furthermore, the Snapdragon X Plus X1P64100 receives scores of 1,903 and 2,410 on Geekbench’s ML Inference benchmark despite having an unidentified Qualcomm Adreno GPU.

Since the chip in question is probably a pre-production sample, these initial benchmark scores should improve when the final product is launched. The Snapdragon X Plus X1P64100 with a 10-core CPU cluster is also expected to perform slightly worse in multithreaded programs compared to the Snapdragon X Elite, given that there is only a two-core difference between the two chipsets.

Despite the benchmarks, we are not sure how much performance the new chip from Qualcomm has to offer compared to the competition.

We’ll be learning about all of the changes between the two chipsets when Qualcomm formally announces the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus on April 24, so stay tuned.
