Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Says Its Ultimate RPG Is Impossible Before PlayStation 6

"There's Tech We Don't Have Yet"

Story Highlight
  • Larian Studios has already started working on its next game.
  • The developer also has plans for an ambitious RPG that won’t be possible before the PlayStation 6.
  • Therefore, the next game will not realize the studio’s ultimate vision.

Not too long ago, Swen Vincke confirmed that Larian Studios has moved on from the Baldur’s Gate franchise, even ruling out the possibility of new DLC for the award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3.

Following that, Swen Vincke described his next project and future ambitions. He has an ultimate RPG in mind, but this project will not come to fruition until at least the next generation of consoles.

Why it matters: Larian Studios has always been one to aim for the skies, so it comes as no surprise that the team is looking beyond the current technology and setting its sights on the PlayStation 6.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, the boss of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, talked about future ambitions and his thoughts on the industry’s current state. He stated that he was unhappy with recent layoffs and blamed them on publisher greed.

Moreover, he talked about a future game, which has been planned for a long time. According to Swen Vincke, the idea had existed before the development of Baldur’s Gate 3.

I call this the very big RPG that will dwarf them all.

– Swen Vincke

While talking about this project, Swen Vincke stated that it’s a very long and complicated plan. He also confirmed that it is not possible to make since the tech needed does not exist yet.

Still, the director hopes the next-gen consoles will finally offer what Larian Studios is looking for, even if he is oblivious to the target specifications for PlayStation and Xbox’s future hardware.

I hope we’re gonna get something that’s gonna bring us closer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is The Definitive Larian Studios Game For Now

Therefore, Larian Studios’ next game will not be able to aim as high as Swen Vincke hopes, but the game after that might be the biggest RPG in the industry.

The director also says that Larian Studios does not want to drag out development any longer than it needs to. He believes Baldur’s Gate 3 taking six years of development was not ideal.

During the interview, he states that, much like Baldur’s Gate 3, the next game is likely to be launched in early access. However, it is still in pre-production, so we don’t expect much information on this project anytime soon.
