Dragon’s Dogma 2 Ray Tracing Barely Noticeable In Most Comparisons

Differences Are Very Subtle!

Story Highlight
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 supports ray-traced global illumination.
  • In side-by-side comparisons, ray tracing does not deliver the best results.
  • This technology is at its best indoors.

At its heart, Dragon’s Dogma 2 appears to be an incredible RPG. With a score of 87/100 on Metacritic, many have claimed that it could become a Game of the Year contender by the end of 2024.

However, its performance and visuals leave a lot to be desired. The game runs poorly on consoles, and the 1% lows are horrible on PC. While it features ray tracing, this technology does not appear too well implemented either.

Why it matters: Ray tracing is often used as the selling point of modern AAA games since it has become very popular.

Well-known Youtuber ElAnalistaDeBits, who has over 600k subscribers, has posted a new video showcasing a ray-tracing comparison in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

The game features ray-traced global illumination, but the best examples of this technology are found indoors. Dark interiors and environments are beautifully lit with flams that cast realistic shadows.

However, outdoors, where players will spend most of their time, the RTGI does little to enhance the atmosphere. The visual differences are so subtle that it may be best to keep the setting turned off.

To Capcom’s credit, the game’s own lighting system is impressive. Therefore, whichever option you pick, this part of Dragon’s Dogma 2 will not disappoint. The key problem seems to be the RPG’s CPU-bound nature for the time being.

Capcom is no stranger to ray-tracing, but its past implementations have suffered from similar issues. For instance, Resident Evil 4 Remake, which featured ray-traced reflections, often looked just as good without them.

The Character Creation of Dragon’s Dogma 2 Is A Highlight

Considering this is the first open-world game on the RE Engine, we think Capcom did a good enough job in the visual department. Furthermore, Dragon’s Dogma 2 excels in its animation quality.

Since the game is very combat-heavy, the high-quality animations should enhance the overall experience.

With Dragon’s Dogma 2 mere hours away from release, its anticipation has paved the path for its arrival as Steam’s top-selling game, with the RPG poised to be welcomed by millions across all platforms.
