Possible Spiritual Successor To Metal Gear Solid?

Story Highlights
  • Hideo Kojima played a major role in Sony’s recent State of Play.
  • In addition to Death Stranding 2, he announced a new espionage action IP.
  • The game’s development will pick up pace after Death Stranding 2’s release.

State of Play has just concluded, debuting various trailers for games like Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and more. As expected, Death Stranding 2 was also part of the event.

However, Hideo Kojima had a few surprises to share. In addition to his current game, he announced a brand new action-espionage IP in collaboration with PlayStation.

Why this matters: Hideo Kojima has always had close ties to Sony, but he has also partnered with Xbox for OD recently. This new collaboration signifies another major team-up for the developer.

The developer has confirmed that the project is called Physint for the time being.

While much of this game remains a mystery for now, Hideo Kojima describes it as a next-generation experience. Suffice it to say, the game won’t be released for many years, with Kojima Productions targeting the PS6 as potential hardware.

He further pointed to movie-like qualities. Everything from the performance, story, and casting will immerse players in the experience. While working on this project, the developer will receive full support from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Hideo Kojima’s fascination for films is no secret. The developer has tried to blend his games with this medium time and again, pursuing a similar goal with OD. Still, he clarifies that Physint will ultimately be an interactive game.

Fans shouldn’t expect to learn much about this game in the coming years. Kojima Productions is currently busy shipping Death Stranding 2 in 2025, so Physint will not be the main focus till then.

Hideo Kojima also believes that the brand-new IP will be the culmination of his work.

From the way this IP is described, it does sound a bit familiar to Metal Gear Solid. The term action-espionage could be a clever but subtle reference to the developer’s past work, setting the stage for similar themes in the upcoming game.

Hideo Kojima still has a fondness for this series. However, his rocky relationship with Konami means that he is unable to work on any new entries. Therefore, Physint might be the next best thing for those craving Kojima’s expertise in Metal Gear Solid again.
