The Witcher is CD Projekt RED’s most successful franchise, and after the third entry in the series, this IP is now considered one of the best in the RPG genre. Capitalizing on this popularity, the developers announced multiple projects in 2022, including a remake.

The original Witcher game is being rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5. It will also feature an open world, with the developer intending to eliminate the bad parts of the game for this remake.

Why it matters: The original game was released in 2007. Therefore, it has many outdated elements that can be touched up in the new release.

As noted by GamesRadar, the game is being developed by the Rebel Wolves team, which includes CEO Jakub Rokosz. The CEO has been a part of the development of The Witcher 2 and 3, but he regrets not working on the first game in the franchise.

While speaking about the remake, he stated:

“we need an honest, down-to-earth analysis of which parts are simply bad, outdated, and need to be remade.”

The developers believe that the great parts should be retained in the remake as they are the key pillars of the game and can’t be discarded. However, many fans have already guessed which parts would be removed from the game.

This includes the romance mechanics and the notorious swamp sections. Elsewhere, the combat is expected to receive an overhaul, likely bringing it closer to the combat of The Witcher 3.

Apart from cutting the bad elements, the developers will rearrange the good parts. All of this should lead to a fresh experience and one worthy of the current Witcher legacy.

While some fans may be upset that the remake won’t be a one-to-one match, the studio hopes these changes will change the game for the better.

Still, The Witcher remake isn’t coming anytime soon. According to the studio, it will arrive after The Witcher 4, which is expected to enter production later this year. Therefore, fans should not expect new content from this IP for some time.
