Cyberpunk 2077: CDPR Exploring Multiplayer Elements For Sequel

CDPR Could Go Live Service For Cyberpunk Sequel!

Story Highlights
  • CDPR states multiplayer elements are being planned for Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
  • The team previously promised multiplayer content for Cyberpunk 2077 DLC.
  • A multiplayer spin-off for The Witcher is also in development from The Molasses Flood.

Cyberpunk 2077 is considered one of CD Projekt RED’s best modern games. Despite a botched release and many broken promises, the team’s latest game boasts over 500K positive reviews and a plethora of accolades for its expansion, Phantom Liberty.

Recent success has provided the team with a new enthusiasm for future projects. CD Projekt RED has teased a much more ambitious game for Project Orion, the sequel, with one innovation coming in the form of multiplayer.

Why it matters: While this studio has primarily created single-player adventures in the past, a multiplayer game could allow it to experiment with an MMO-like format for the game, making for an interesting approach to Project Orion.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty

Speaking to Reuters, CD Projekt RED’s Adam Badowski revealed new details about the team’s future games. He confirmed that The Witcher 4 would enter production this year, and Project Orion’s team would expand to 80 developers.

Referring to the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, the report states:

“The company was considering including multiplayer elements.”

Following this statement, CD Projekt RED appears to be interested in fulfilling one of its many ambitions from 2020. Before the terrible launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was promised to receive multiplayer through a DLC update.

However, with the team shifting resources to patch the base game, these plans were eventually scrapped. Multiplayer could, therefore, become a unique selling point for Project Orion, setting it apart from the first game.

The team is also assisting The Molasses Flood with Project Sirius, a multiplayer-focused spin-off for The Witcher. Such projects could nudge CD Projekt RED in the direction of live-service development, keeping its biggest franchises relevant for many years.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty

Elsewhere in the interview, Badowski claimed that CD Projekt RED is ready to avoid another botched launch.

The studio has changed its production process after Cyberpunk 2077’s failure, ensuring its developers can polish the game and create a finished product without much pressure.

We recently outlined a few of our most-wanted features for Project Orion, and while multiplayer was not on the list, this would be a welcome addition.

The Cyberpunk 2077 universe is full of rich lore to explore, characters to interact with, and stories to discover, so it would lend itself well to a multiplayer MMO-like setting. However, it remains to be seen if this is the direction considered by the team.
