With Xbox and Activision Blizzard joining forces, the gaming industry is looking forward to an expanded catalog for Game Pass. Many fans have anticipated the addition of games like Call of Duty to the service, with earlier reports also pointing to a similar scenario.
However, Phil Spencer has debunked all the rumors. The Xbox boss has confirmed no such plans are underway, and fans should not expect Activision Blizzard games on the service before 2024.
Why it matters: In the past, Bethesda games were added to the subscription immediately after the deal was closed, leading to similar expectations for Microsoft’s latest merger.
During a recent episode of the Xbox podcast, Phil Spencer was asked about the arrival of the new games on Game Pass. He elaborated that the catalog was delayed due to the regulatory process.
Until recently, Microsoft faced stiff opposition from the CMA and the FTC. After defeating the latter in court and earning the former’s approval, the gaming giant was allowed to complete the transaction. However, this meant that Microsoft could not complete other preparations.
Phil Spencer said:
“So now the deal is closed, we’re starting that work.”
When discussing a potential window for these games, Phil Spencer pointed to a recent Tweet that hinted at a 2024 release window. He believes that this window is accurate, so fans should stay tuned for next year.
Unfortunately, this means that the deal will not have any immediate benefits for Xbox users. However, Microsoft may plan something to make up for the lack of games in 2023.
In addition to the Call of Duty franchise, Activision owns the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Prototype, and much more. Therefore, with more time for planning, Microsoft may add all of these IPs to the service through a massive drop next year.
We believe Xbox fans should not be disappointed with Phil Spencer’s latest update.
The Xbox boss is aware of the somewhat disappointing announcement, but this may encourage the gaming giant to come up with something that makes up for the lack of Activision games in 2023.
In addition to releasing its IPs on Game Pass, Activision hopes to use the merger to develop remakes and more immersive iterations of Call of Duty. Therefore, both gaming giants have a bright future ahead.
