GeForce RTX 4070 Already Using Improved 12VHPWR Connector

Testing Improvements Before 12V-2x6 Connector!

Both Nvidia and PCI-SIG are working on an improved design for the current 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. This enhanced design, known as 12V-2×6, will feature a better connection between the graphics cards and the power supply and an improved pin design.

The 12V-2×6 power connector comes equipped with shortened sense pins that only work when the connector is fully inserted, eliminating user error. However, it appears Nvidia is already using the modified sense pin design on the GeForce RTX 4070.

While not a lot of GeForce RTX 4070 models use the 12VHPWR power connector, the Founder’s Edition and other custom models, like the MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4070, come equipped with a 16-pin connector for extra overclocking headroom.

According to Ignor’sLAB, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 FE uses a modified header with a 1.7mm inward offset. This makes it similar to the new 12V-2×6 connector compared to the older 12VHPWR.

Even though the GeForce RTX 4070 has an improved 12VHPWR, this is not the final version of 12V-2×6. Nvidia and PCI-SIG are currently in the last stage of finalizing the design for the new power connector and might include it in graphics cards starting next year.

Still, it is a good move to see an improved design from Nvidia to reduce the risk of melting. It should also be noted that lower-end cards like the GeForce RTX 4070 do not pull much power, unlike the GeForce RTX 4090.
