Alan Wake Opening Quote Cost Remedy Entertainment $1

Stephen King Asked For Just $1 For Quote!

Remedy Entertainment is finally bringing Alan Wake back in 2023. The horror franchise is set to receive a new entry in a few months, and the developer has already revealed plenty of details about the sequel.

While audiences are excited to try the upcoming game, Sam Lake from Remedy has revealed an interesting detail about the first game in the series. According to Sam Lake, Remedy paid just $1 for the first game’s opening quote.

Why it matters: Alan Wake opened with a quote from Stephen King. The author is famous for various novels, and it was exciting for Remedy to use his work in their game.

The quote was originally written by Stephen King for an article in 2008. Two years later, Remedy Entertainment began its horror franchise with the same words.

Sam Lake recently spoke to Eurogamer and revealed more about this collaboration with the renowned author. The franchise took inspiration from Stephen King’s work in various aspects, and Same Lake wanted to highlight this inspiration through the game’s opening.

He said:

“Creating the original Alan Wake, I really wanted a quote from him to start it off. He wanted $1 for us to get the rights to use it.”

Sam Lake then commented that Stephen King was very generous for making that offer. While the franchise has a lot of anticipation behind it in 2023, Stephen King’s offer was incredible for a developer who was not very familiar with the genre in 2010.

Following its release, Alan Wake became a success for Remedy Entertainment. The original game sold 4.5 million copies in under five years, but the recently released remaster ended up being a financial letdown for the studio.
