OceanGate recently launched an expedition to the remains of the Titanic. However, this expedition went horribly wrong, and the submarine lost communication with the main ship.
Following this news, more details about the submarine have started to show up on the internet. In addition to other details, internet users have also discovered that the submarine was controlled by a cheap $30 Logitech controller.
Why it matters: The Logitech F710 is far from a great controller in 2023. Even for general use, the controller falls short, but OceanGate has been using the 13-year-old controller for this expensive expedition.
The controller in question is the Logitech F710. It offers a basic design and can be purchased for just $30.
While controllers have gone through significant changes over the last decade, it is surprising that OceanGate is still using such an outdated controller. Modern controllers like the DualSense or the Xbox Series S|X controllers are more comfortable, along with additional features.
It should be noted that console controllers have been used for various tasks before. In 2017, the US Navy announced it would use Xbox 360 controllers to control submarine periscopes.
This can also be beneficial in terms of costs, but it is surprising that a major company like OceanGate did not invest in a better controller.
The Titan submarine is estimated to have around 70 more hours of oxygen. Reports also claim that the crew may not be able to survive even if they make it to the surface.
