Over a year after Rockstar confirmed the existence of a new GTA title, no official information has been revealed. However, GTA 6 is closer than ever, with the Take-Two CEO recently hinting at a fiscal year 2025 release date.
The CEO predicts record-breaking earnings, which is not surprising for a new GTA release. GTA 5 was a record-breaking game, and GTA 6 is expected to keep up this momentum for Rockstar.
A gaming expert also predicts GTA 6 is likely to exceed 25 million sales at launch.
Why it matters: GTA 6 has been rumored and anticipated for many years. It will also mark the longest gap between two successive GTA games from Rockstar, leading to even more anticipation from the fans.
Industry expert Joost Van Dreunen highlighted GTA 6 in his latest newsletter. According to the newsletter, 25 million is a safe estimate for sales, and it is predicted to make at least $1 billion in a short time frame.
Compared to GTA 5, GTA 6 will launch to a smaller player base. The PS5 has sold over 38.4 million units, and Sony expects to reach over 63 million sales by Q1 2024. However, Xbox Series S|X sales are unknown.
The console is estimated to have crossed the 20 million mark already, but Microsoft does not report official numbers. Nonetheless, both consoles will have sold approximately 100 million units or more by the time GTA 6 releases.
Comparatively, the PS3 and Xbox 360 had sold close to 160 million units by the time GTA 5 was released. Still, 100 million players should be a decent player base for Rockstar. The game’s anticipation and the increasing popularity of the gaming industry could mean that GTA 6 manages to sell 25 million at launch, even if it launches to fewer players.
It remains to be seen if Rockstar will release the PC port at launch. Previously, the gaming giant has launched GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC at a later date, but changing this trend could make the predicted figure even easier to achieve.
