Valheim Dev Opposes Paid Mods, Believes They Should Be Free

'Goes Against Creative And Open Spirit Of Modding'

Valheim is one of the biggest indie games of recent times. The open-world survival game was first released as an early access title, and it performed well, receiving praise from fans and critics alike. It has even sold over 10 million units.

However, Valheim currently lacks official mod support. In a recent Steam announcement, the game’s developers discussed mods and made their stance clear. Iron Gate Studio is not a fan of paid mods.

Why It Matters: Modding is an integral part of PC gaming as it allows users to customize aspects of the game to their liking or fix game bugs. However, locking mods behind a paywall is a popular practice that has been gaining more traction recently.

The developers explicitly stated that they do not support the idea of mods being locked behind a paywall. They said:

“We feel that charging money for a mod is against the creative and open spirit of modding itself.”

Iron Gate Studio has also expressed its support for modding, but they emphasize that the game’s lack of official mod support means that the compatibility of mods with every version of the game is not guaranteed.

Additionally, they advise players to clearly indicate if mods are being used on a server. Iron Gate Studio also mentioned that they understand the difficulties related to creating and developing mods.

They acknowledged the time and effort required, stating that modders can be financially compensated through donation systems. However, they remain firm in the belief that locking mods behind a paywall is not the appropriate approach.

Paid modding has been a controversial topic in the gaming industry. Creation Club was a program by Bethesda that aimed to sell mods to console and PC players. However, the company faced significant controversy due to this feature.

Despite the controversy, Creation Club was still featured in the latest remastered version of Skyrim released recently. A recent ESRB rating also hinted that the Creation Club program may be included in the upcoming Starfield.
