Highest Grossing Media Franchise In The World!

The Pokémon Company recently updated its website after the financial year ended in March 2023. The company has posted statistics regarding the sales of its media franchise, revealing that its video game franchise, available in over 9 languages, has now sold over 480 million units.

Why it matters: Pokémon video games have successfully spanned multiple generations of consoles, consistently demonstrating their popularity, as evidenced by the impressive sales figure of 480 million units for the gaming franchise.

The company has seen an increase of 40 million units sold since last year, which can likely be attributed to the success of their latest open-world Pokémon game, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

This game achieved remarkable sales, surpassing 10 million copies within three days. As such, the company is nearing the milestone of selling 500 million copies, which would place it as the second-best-selling video game franchise, just behind the Mario franchise.

The financial report further reveals that the franchise has achieved a remarkable figure by selling over 52.9 billion cards. These cards are available in 14 languages and have reached 89 countries worldwide. It’s worth noting that certain Pokémon cards hold significant value, with some being valued at thousands of dollars.

Other notable statistics include the Tv show airing in 192 countries before it concluded its 26-year run on March 24, 2023.

These statistics demonstrate the global success of Pokémon across various media franchises, encompassing TV shows, games, and card games. Pokémon stands as one of the highest-grossing media franchises globally, ranking alongside iconic brands such as Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.

Additionally, it is worth noting that a two-part DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was announced last year. It has the potential to boost sales for the video game franchise further, bringing the gaming franchise closer to the 500 million mark.
