Sony has been offering cloud gaming for a long time with PlayStation Now, which offered many games from PS4 and PS3 to play on your PS5, PS4, and PC. But last year, Sony limited the service by removing its standalone subscription service and merging it into the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
However, it looks like Sony is still dedicated to focusing on cloud gaming in the future. As reported by The Verge, Sony is currently hiring 22 roles related to cloud gaming, and one role description says,
“Develop and deliver the strategic vision for cloud game streaming at PlayStation.”
While a few of the job listings have been deleted or removed, a new listing for Sr. Software Engineer – Cloud Engineering at PlayStation states:
“You will use your skills and passion on projects that are building the future of game streaming.”
Sony is hiring for many other positions like engineers and project managers, and one such listing refers to leading the cloud gaming revolution.
Furthermore, a Director of Hardware Engineer position highlights PlayStation cloud gaming products like RemotePlay, SharePlay, and more. Looking at these job descriptions, it seems likely that Sony is preparing for the future with a focus on cloud gaming.
Sony’s gaming rival, Microsft, is also a significant player in this limited space of the gaming industry. With offerings like Xbox Cloud Gaming and a plethora of recent deals with cloud gaming providers, Microsoft has managed to stay ahead of the competition so far.
This has likely motivated Sony to accelerate efforts in cloud gaming. It was also leaked earlier that Sony is returning to the portable console market with a new cloud-based handheld device codenamed Q-Lite, which might release in November this year.
The handheld is said to utilize PlayStation’s Remote Play to provide a handheld experience for PS4 and PS5 games through a separate device. This may be the beginning of a more significant push for cloud gaming from Sony.
What are your thoughts on a more cloud-oriented approach from Sony? Let’s discuss this in the comments below.
