The Deal Will Hurt Sony?

Microsoft’s latest acquisition is still underway as the gaming giant tries to convince regulators and rival companies. Unsurprisingly, Sony has been the most significant opposing force in this scenario, claiming that the deal will cause harm to the industry. 

An industry analyst has recently discussed the deal and could have pointed to the exact reason for Sony’s fierce opposition. According to Michael Pachter, the acquisition will hurt Sony badly

He stated:

“The deal is going to hurt Sony badly, That doesn’t hurt consumers at all.”

Michael Pachter argues that $15/month is better value than buying a new console, a Call of Duty game, and a PS Plus/Xbox Live Gold subscription. 

Microsoft claims that the gaming giant will bring Call of Duty to more players than before should the acquisition go through. This includes its subscription service Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming will allow users to play Call of Duty on nearly every device, like smartphones and non-gaming PCs. This might be why the analyst believes that the acquisition will not hurt consumers at the end of the day. 

On the other hand, Sony may lose out on potential sales due to Game Pass and Cloud gaming. For instance, a few Call of Duty fans likely buy the games for the campaign each year.

Such Call of Duty fans can subscribe for a month instead of paying full price for the game at launch.

Michael Pachter previously claimed that the Activision deal is likely to succeed. Microsoft is also aiming to complete the acquisition by June 2023, but this will depend on their progress with the competition and regulators.
