The sale of desktop graphics cards is not where it used to be. Even though the Chinese market saw an increase of 9% in January compared to last year, the market is still on a 42% decline in sales year to year.
According to a German retailer Mindfactory, the price of graphics cards has increased a lot and is now 93% higher than what it used to be in the year 2020. The high prices result from the strategy that both Nvidia and AMD have adopted for their current graphics card lineup.
Nvidia and AMD made a lot of revenue last year by selling their stocks to cryptocurrency miners. Now that the mining era is finally over, both teams are looking elsewhere to generate the same income, resulting in ridiculous pricing.
On average, an AMD Radeon graphics card would set you at least €600. Nvidia graphics cards usually cost a bit higher and would set you back around €825. If you take prices from two years ago, the average selling price for AMD was €305, while Nvidia was selling for €398. That’s a more than 100% increase in average price from both AMD and Nvidia.
Hardware Info also recently shared its report showing a decline in AMD Radeon RX 6000 series price, while the GeForce RTX 3090 from Nvidia also saw a close to 12% decline in price last month.
At the same time, the current AMD and Nvidia generation cards are seeing a reduction in MSRP by roughly 5.6% and 3%, respectively. As a result, we are now witnessing the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 selling for below-launch pricing.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is now priced 14% cheaper than it was at launch though it’s still 6% higher than the suggested retail price. At the same time, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 6.9% cheaper than its suggested retail price. On the other hand, the GeForce RTX 4090 is 6.2%, and GeForce RTX 4080 is around 2.5% cheaper than its launch price.
