Nintendo Moving To $70 Games?

The Nintendo Switch is nearly six years old and has sold over 122.55 million units sold. Nintendo launched the console with an impressive library, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild led the launched line-up for the Switch.

A sequel to the beloved game is set to release in 2023. While anticipation for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom is high, a listing for the game on the Nintendo eShop could be concerning.

The listing shows that Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom is priced at $69.99.

The price has now been removed from the eShop. Previously, stores like Gamestop and Amazon were taking pre-orders for the game at $59.99. However, they have temporarily halted pre-orders.

This could mean that Nintendo, much like other gaming giants, is looking to transition to $70 games. Sony was the first to raise video game prices in 2020 with the launch of the PlayStation 5, and many publishers like EA have since followed.

As the industry continues to grow, games are becoming more costly and time-consuming to develop. The industry has stayed at the $60 price point for new AAA games for several decades, but nearly every major publisher is now raising prices.

It should also be noted that, unlike other publishers, Nintendo games are notorious for retaining prices. First-party games from Nintendo see smaller discounts compared to others, with titles like Super Mario Odyssey still being sold for $50 on Amazon.

A Nintendo Direct is also scheduled for later today. The publisher has stated that it will focus mostly on upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Fans can expect The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to be a highlight, and the official announcement for $70 games could also be made at the Direct.
