Nintendo Scrapped Plans For Mid-Gen Switch Console

Expert Verified By

Nintendo had initially planned a mid-Gen console refresh for the Switch

Since its debut, the Nintendo Switch has been a huge hit, reaching significant milestones, ranking as the fifth-best-selling console of all time and the third-best-selling console in Japan. It has received a lot of positive feedback from fans.

But since the Nintendo Switch was released in March of 2017, almost about 5 years ago, its hardware has grown a bit dated for the liking of modern-day games, which is why fans have been longing for an upgrade to the hardware for a long time.

For years, there have been rumors about a mid-generation Nintendo Switch, referred to as the Nintendo Switch Pro, but there has never been any hard backing to support those rumors.

But recently, John Linneman of Digital Foundry revealed in the most recent podcast that a mid-generation Nintendo Switch Hardware was formerly anticipated, but that is no longer happening.

He stated,

…there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point and that seems to be no longer happening.

He further stated that,

And thus it’s pretty clear that whatever they do next is going to be the actual next-generation hardware. I don’t think it’s going to be 2023.”

According to him, Nintendo is nervous about the future of the Nintendo Switch since they have had a difficult time with consoles like the Gamecube, which did very poorly, and the Wii, which did quite well. Still, the Wii U was a complete failure.

We don’t know what lies ahead for Nintendo, but we are excited and looking forward to it. This is the limited information we have for now, but we will be looking for more news regarding the Nintendo Switch in the future.

On that note, what do you think about a mid-generation Nintendo Switch hardware once being planned but now no longer happening? Let us know in the comments section.
