The Witcher 4 Director: ‘Every Single NPC’ Will Look Like They’re Experiencing ‘Their Own Story’

They'll Be Living Their Lives!

Story Highlight
  • The Witcher 4 director, Sebastian Kalemba, says the game’s NPCs will be very immersive.
  • Each NPC will tell their own stories and play unique roles, almost as if they are alive.
  • The way NPCs look, act, and portray emotions—CDPR is improving everything to be as realistic as possible.

The Witcher 4’s highly anticipated reveal arguably stole the spotlight during The Game Awards 2024. While some were taken aback by the trailer’s beautiful cinematics and visuals, others criticized CD Projekt Red for changing the game’s protagonist to Ciri—something the studio expected. Regardless, CDPR’s stock saw a massive 71% increase last year following the announcement.

Now, the game’s director, Sebastian Kalemba, has revealed more info about The Witcher 4 NPCs. He says that every single character will tell their own stories and fill their unique roles to create a level of realism never seen in CDPR games before.

Why it matters: The interview with The Witcher 4 director suggests that every NPC will feel extremely realistic during our playthroughs, with each expressing their stories and personalities fluidly.

During an interview with Gamertag Radio (from 5:26), the game director clarified that developers are pushing the quality of The Witcher 4 NPCs to make them look, behave, express, and convey emotions realistically.

‘We have this rule to make every single [The Witcher 4] NPC looking like they’re living, with their own story’

CD Projekt Red is trying to create an ‘even more immersive [NPC] experience’ than we are used to seeing.

We saw something similar with the villagers of Stormford in the official reveal, where they force a little girl to pray in the woods until Ciri saves her from a monster.

It is worth taking these remarks with a pinch of salt, as some users argue the devs might just be creating marketing hype with these tidbits.

The Witcher 4
The Witcher 4 game director previously also teased that Geralt might be playable in the game.

Regardless, The Witcher 4 is likely years away since it barely entered production a few months ago. CDPR also wants the RPG to avoid the Cyberpunk 2077 launch disaster, so it is potentially skipping on Xbox Series S.

Will the Witcher 4 NPCs see significant improvements to what we saw in the last entry, or will the difference be minuscule? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.
