A proposal by Qualcomm to acquire Intel has reportedly been made. Since neither Intel nor Qualcomm has responded to requests for comment on the matter, this Wall Street Journal claim could be considered a rumor.

With 57% of its share value lost since the beginning of the year, Intel is facing significant challenges. At $87 billion, the company’s valuation represents its peak, making it the most valuable in the world at one point.

An acquisition between the two would result in a decline for a business that had been the most valuable chip manufacturer in the world for years, thanks largely to its x86 processing technology.

If a deal were reached and approved by the regulations, it would be a huge victory for Qualcomm, which returned to the desktop CPU market this year as part of Microsoft’s AI PC plan after years of supremacy in mobile processors.

Even though many of its companies are still profitable, Intel is arguably in its worst condition in years. This August, the corporation announced significant layoffs, a change in strategy, and a downsizing of almost 15% of its workers following a $1.6 billion loss.

As it works to restore its manufacturing capabilities, Intel has also recently had to rely on TSMC to manufacture some of its most advanced chips.

Regulatory clearances would be necessary for a possible takeover, and this might take months or even years. Activision was recently acquired by Microsoft, while NVIDIA made an attempt to acquire ARM, but that attempt was ultimately canceled because of legal obstacles.
